March 05, 1906 – April 20, 2008
Ruth Marie Borchardt, age 102, passed away on April 20, 2008 in Frisco, Texas. She was born on March 5, 1906 just west of the small community of Frisco, Texas to Mattie (Wolfe) and Henry C. McCormick. In 1930, Ruth married Aubrey Borchardt. She was a school teacher and a member of the First United Methodist Church. Ruth graduated from Frisco High School in 1924 with a class of thirteen students. Her senior year was the first year of use for the two-story building that is today the main FISD Administration Building on Maple Street. Ruth attended Texas Women’s College in Fort Worth, which is now Texas Weslayan. After a year, she received her temporary teaching certificate and began teaching at Hackberry School in the Frisco-Little Elm area. There, she taught fourth, fifth and sixth grades and attended North Texas State in the summers to finish her degree. While still finishing her schooling she taught in Frisco and then went back to Hackberry, which had consolidated with Little Elm, to teach and be principal of the elementary school. In 1932, during the depression, it was decided that families should only have one breadwinner, so she lost her job and decided to go to Dallas and approached Draughon’s Business College, offering to teach spelling and English in exchange for being allowed to take typing and shorthand. Soon after, Ruth was offered a job to teach the course – that short-term situation lasted twelve years. In 1948, her son, Mack Borchardt, Frisco’s Fire Chief, was born. When he began first grade she decided to get back into the teaching profession in Frisco. She taught middle school and then moved up to high school mathematics. Ruth taught for twenty one years, retiring in 1976. Then substitute taught for an additional ten years. The Ruth Borchardt Elementary School building was dedicated to her in 2001. Ruth is survived by her son, Mack Borchardt and his wife Allison of Frisco, Texas; grandchildren, Jenny Murray and her husband Darrin of McKinney, Texas, Wes Borchardt and his friend, Carrie Chenault of Aubrey, Texas, Alexa Gail Borchardt of Frisco, Texas, Mackenzie Ruth Borchardt of Frisco, Texas; great-grandchildren, Garrett Christopher Murray and Kate Marie Murray of McKinney, Texas; some wonderful caregivers who helped her for the last three years. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Borchardt; parents; three brothers; three sisters.
